FEVER-

The most common presentation in infections caused due to pathogenic organisms is fever.
The usual human body temperature is 98.4degree F. OR 37degree C.So,any rise in the temperature above the normal body temperature is called as fever.
Types of fever:
Acute and short duration fever:They are of short duration,sudden onset with acute symptoms;the body temperature may rise to above 100degreeF. For eg-Chickenpox,typhoid,tonsillitis,influenza.
Influenza/H1N1:
Influenza is an acute respiratory tract infection caused by influenza virus.Swine flu is with typeA influenza virus.
Chronic fever:
They are of longer duration,gradual onset.The subject has a past history of repeated spells of infection.It may be characterized by low-grade fever,which continues for several months. For eg- Tuberculosis.
Intermittent fever:
An attack of fever with recurring paroxysms of elevated temperature seperated by intervals during which body temperature is normal. For eg-Malaria.
Nutritional management for fever:
To replenish fluids and electrolytes. Improve nutrient intake to balance catabolism. To prevent nutritional deficiencies. Improve energy,protein and carbohydrate intake.
Dietary guidelines:
The diet should be nutrionally adequate and meet the energy requirements. Easily digestible foods like khichadi,upma,custard,porridge,clear soup can be given. Food should be bland,with none or less spices. Small and ferquent meals should be given. Some fever patients may not have normal appetite.In such case,start with diet which is soft,semi liquid in consistency and easy to digest.It should be of small quantity and nutrient dense. Fatty and fried food should be avoided. Fluid intake should be increased.
Sample Menu for Influenza:
Early Morng-Tea(1 cup)+Wheat biscuits/suji toast(2-3nos) Breakfast-(8.30am)-Mung dal chilla(2 no)/Idli(3 no)+ sambar(1 bl)/Thepla(2 no)+coconut or lemon water. Mid-morng(11am)-Fruit juice(1 glass) + paneer cubes salad(1 bl). Lunch(1.30pm)-Veg khichadi(1 plate)+Raita(1 bl) /chapati(2 no) + veg(1 bl)+ dal-rice(1 bl) Evening(4.30pm)-Dal water/veg soup(1 bl) + upma(1 cup) Dinner(7.30pm)-chapati(2 no)+ veg(1 bl) + fruit custard(1 cup). Bed time(9.30pm)-Flavoured milk(1 cup) + 3-4 almonds.
